Revised Reading Schedule for 5th & 6th

Below is the new reading schedule. We are finishing at the same time, but I changed it up a bit. Remember, you have to have the pages read BEFORE you get to class. Also be reminded that even if you're absent, you're responsible to keep up with your readings.

2/19 and 2/22 - pgs. 1-60; 2/23 and 2/24 - pgs. 63-97; 2/25 and 2/26 - pgs. 100-128; 3/2 and 3/3 - pgs 128-175; 3/4 and 3/5 - pgs. 178-207; 3/8 and 3/9 - pgs. 208-239; 3/11 and 3/12 - pgs. 239-280

Hope you all are enjoying it so far. I am amazed at what these men have endured thus far, the calm among them, and the vivid details in the writing. WOW! Share some of your thoughts here if you wish!

If you choose (for a few extra points), compare and contrast yourself and one of the men on the Endurance. In chapter 5, there were several descriptions of the men, and I could relate to at least one or two of them. If you do respond, make sure that you use specific quotes from the book...and, remember, it's compare AND contrast. Tuesday, 2/23 at 10 p.m. is the deadline.

Love you all!

From The Endurence I believe that I am most like the meteorologist Leonard Hussey. I like him have a sence of humor. While I constantly tease others it is all in good clean fun and I do not mind making fun of myself or when others tease me. I have also been told that I have "a sharp, satiric tongue", but unlike Hussy, my musical talents are non existent. I cannot carry a tune, nor can I play any instrument.

If I was ever asked to describe myself in 4 words, I would say that I am Blackboro's incarnate. As mentioned in the book Endurance, "Blackboro was an extremely quiet individual but nonetheless quick-witted and well liked, a cheerful, willing shipmate, who helped Green in the galley." Like Blackboro, I often don't speak, but I am able to associate and get along with others without any issues. Of course, I am not a shipmate, nor am I willing enough to work due to my fatal disease of laziness, but regardless, the similarities weighs down the differences.

Out of the 28 members on the "Endurance," I am most like Ernest Shackleton. As mentioned in page 21, Shackelton was, "energetic, romantic, and thirsty for adventure." Like Ernest, I am always up for something new and ready to explore any place or idea that is mentioned to me that catches my attention. I am said to be a "hopeless romantic" and I'm always hyper and alert. As also mentioned in page 21, Shackleton's nature always drove him to be the leader. I always have to be the one setting the rules and saying what to do. But unlike Shackleton, I have no interest in exploring the Antartic seas, or anything that might have a block of ice that could possibly put me, or others in danger. Either way, I am more like him than any other member in the ship.

After reading Chapter 5 of Endurance, I can relate myself to the character of Leonard Hussey. As said in the book, "he had a sharp, satiric tongue, but he could take a joke against himself without losing his good spirits." Like Hussey, I have a rude, sharp tongue and say things in not the nicest ways. On the other hand, I differ from Hussey because I cant always take a joke against myself without getting irritated or mad. The book also mentions how "it was not always easy to get the best of Hussey in an exchange of wits." This describes Hussey as stubborn when it comes to him thinking he knows more and best which is just how I am. I always try to prove my point is the smartest and I know best. Unlike Hussey, I do not play the banjo but I am willing to entertain people whenever they want.

I posess many characteristics and the character that I feel that I can relate to and is compatible to these traits is Geroge Marston. In the novel "Endurance" it states, "He was unique among them in that he worried outwardly about the future whereas almost everybody else was confident that everything was going to be all right." I honestly feel that Marston and I express this similarity because I am one to constantly worry, whether it's about school, my family, or my friends. Lately, I have been constantly stressing the importance of school and how I only have one more year left of high school to accomplish some of my goals. This also means that I am soon going to officially be an adult with many challenging responsibilities. I ponder regularly at how time is flying by extremely fast and how I fear that I feel that I will not be able to catch up to it. Unlike George, I may worry, but that does not stop me from having a positive attitude with a brightening smile on my face no matter the circumstances. Marston was continually down and Shackleton feared that his attitude would spread amongst the rest of his crew, but thankfully, that sense of fear does not apply with my peers nor I.

After reading chapter 5 of Endurance I feel I am most like George Marston, the artist aboard the ship. We both have many traits that are both similar and completely opposite. One that is similar is that he is “a moody fellow” kind of like me, I am sometimes up at one moment and disappointed and saddened in instant. His out look on life, meaning he looks outside the box, is another trait I find within myself. For example, when people are thinking of the weekend, I am pondering on the thought of college and a career as a surgeon. One last thing is the fact that when he gets down on life, he images his wife and children that will be waiting for him as he docks. As me who when down or lonely I think of my boyfriend Oliver, and my best friends Nik and Charlene. We differ in a few points which is that fact that he was liked, which is something I never faced where someone like me due to my heard working and eager will. Also I am no artists; I can not draw a straight line even with the assistance of a ruler. We both also were feared to be a cancer as some may put it, spreading our attitude and thoughts to followers.

After reading Endurance I would say I am most like Captain Ernest Shakelton. I am a great leader when chosen to be one. As leader it would be my duty to ensure the safety and well being of my crew if I were captain of a ship and judging by the type of person I am doing this doesn't sound like anything I haven't done before. I could be serious as well as immature at times and just like the author states in page 21 I am "energetic, imaginative and romantic." Serious? Well lets start off by saying I get "are you mad?" quite a few times too much. No! Its just the way I look sometimes. I am a serious person though, when I have a task at hand I concentrate on it and make sure I carry out what is asked of me with a mature attitude. Energetic? Imaginative? Immature? Yes! Everyone is still a little kid inside! I am young, crazy and a big dreamer! Romantic is another word I would say is also another characteristic of mine. Not much of a big flirt but I am sweet :)
