Earth Day & Take Your Child to Work Day

On "Take Your Child to Work Day," many of my diligent students came to school. Fifth period, for example, took a mock AP Test. In doing so, they have no homework Monday night, and they are one step closer to passing that AP test. Woohoo!

To celebrate Earth Day (April 22nd), we wrote tankas (a five-lined lyric poem with 5, 7, 5, 7 and 7 syllables). While visiting our school's wetlands preserve, we used the environment around us as our inspiration! What a beautiful day it was! Mother Earth is good! Feel free to read some of the tankas under this post (Students, please post by Monday night).

AT THE GARDEN
Ethereal sky
Lillies burst with life
Home for dragonfly
Fishes flutter, tadpoles dance
Beauty lies here, our wetlands

MOTHER'S SADNESS
Trees blow in the breeze
Sadly whistling their swan song
Gone are leaves, bark, moss
Greed's their executioner
Mother Earth cries for her loss

THE GIFT
The wind blows softly
Mother Earth opens her arms
Her Sun smiles down
Warming me; my life's renewed
Whisp'ring, "This day's just for you."

THE DAY OUTSIDE
As I look outside,
The feeling is relaxing,
With the birds chirping.
The skies are heavenly blue,
Nature is all around you.

Beautiful preserve.

The sun shines so bright,
while lily pads and other
plants sway from all sides.
Birds chirp and fireflies surround,
this stunning preserve around.

What a nice warm day
Surrounded by nice fresh air
The bright big green plants
Standing just tall as a tree
This is what I call beauty.

It feels great outside
The sweet wind blowing my hair
Cute love birds singing.
And beautiful pink flowers.
This looks like a screensaver.

Let's try not to use dead words. For example, if the pond is good, how about saying something like this:
The healing waters...
The peaceful pond...
The serenity of these waters...
Tranquil waters flow...

Think about what makes your topics "good, great or big" and use those ALIVE AND ACTIVE words instead :o)

Love u!

The wetland preserve...

Wishfully flying
Like the birds in the blue sky
Are many creatures
That amazes the human eyes.
They are known as dragonflies.

Cherry Blossom
Pink dye from nature
Lives high above the people
Only born in march
But found in the western arch
Cherry blossom they are called

Koi Fish
It glides gracefully
A dancer in it's shadow
Many to enjoy
Angels to the water front
Koi fish are the worlds balance

Sunflowers
Bright like simple smiles
Tall and strong to kiss the sky
Favorite to bee's
Grow them in your garden well
And it can be the star shell.

5- As I behold dust,
7- I contemplate your tree’s purl.
5- Smell green aroma
7- Your shine is a brilliant pearl.

Nature is precious.
There is beauty all over,
Like flowers and trees.
But also you can't forget
That outstanding wind called breeze.

The Blue Beauty

Beaches are gorgeous.
The sun is radiant like diamonds.
It shines on the sea.
The clouds dance in the blue sky,
while the birds sing their own songs.

For the Love of Nature

As the wind blows by
A place to reflect
Which brings peace around me
The birds sing, and the leaves dance
Mother Nature surrounds my day

The Niagara falls
Overflowing making art

Like, cake with no butter cream

Outside on the deck,
with a serene ambiance.
The sky oh so blue,

An amazing call
in the water what we see
dolphins begging peace
so let's not do sins
and keep our sea clean.
