Periods 3 & 4

Your HW for this week is to compare and contrast two entries from the pages you read of TFWD. Remember to consider the writer, the message, the events, the lesson learned, the inspiration. You need to write it in Microsoft Word, fix the spelling and grammar then post your response in the comments section.

In addition, be reminded that your sonnet and lit tools test is Monday for period 4, and Tuesday for period 3.

Love you guys!

Jackie S. Period 3 Pages-195-220 of TFWD

In this weeks pages of the freedom writers. Two entries that are similar but different have to be entry 112 and entry 113. In entry 112, the boy explains how its Christmas Eve of the year 1997.And as everyone already knows, It’s a time where everyone gets together, spend quality time with family and friends and make memories. But for this boy, he spend it in the hospital yelling in his fathers intensive care room on the sixth floor to live and that he needed him after he was shot in the head and was attached to 6 different machines to keep him alive. The boy explains how he took a long time to recover from the incident and was never able to speak as clearly ever again and had some trouble remembering some stuff and what not. He also mentions how the bullet never got taken out of his fathers head because it would kill him instantly. In the end, the boy is blessed that he still has his father but is worried that one day the bullet still left, the scars still left in his father maybe the end of the light for him, his family, and his father. The boy explains how he’s glad to still have him and doesn’t point out the message of the entry but pretty much explain to enjoy the small things and enjoy what you have while lasts.
Compared to the girl in Entry 113, who wasn’t so lucky, spent Christmas Eve, alone thinking on how she would give away her mother’s gifts and put away her mother belongings as she explains she had just passed away 8 days earlier. She explains that her mother only went in for a doctor’s appointment and came out with terminal cancer giving her 3 months to live or less. Sadly, she only ended up surviving 3 weeks. She feels guilty that she never got to say her last words or say goodbye to her mom. She explains, after coming home one day afterschool as usual, she saw her mom first thing when she came through the door and thought she was okay after seeing her on her respirator machine. Thinking it’s just part of the medical treatment, she’ informed hours later her mom died and finds her lifeless on the bed. She wasn’t as fortunate as the kid from entry 112 who his dad was terminal till he recovered drastically in a period of time. After her mom died, she didn’t want anyone’s help and lied about being alright and okay. Until she finally accepts the fact that she has to open up to the Freedom Writers and accept them as her second family since that’s the second closest thing to feeling loved with all the events coming up, especially graduation. Like the other entry, the message isn’t out there to be exposed and know what it is. But my thoughts are there can be they’re always alternatives for the emotions you need to recover within yourself.
Similarities in between both of the entrees are that they struggle both on Christmas Eve but only one is happy. But, what kills them the most is too lose a parent that they need to have the complete emotion of being loved. And having someone there see how they succeeded in their high school years and make it to senior year and graduate to go on to college and be someone in life. A lessoned within both entries is even though everyone goes through the rough times, we must all enjoy the little things that can make us at least smile and when we don’t have the main people they’re that encourage us to go on and live life, there always other too that care just the same and can make our day with a few simple words. Hence, when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.

The two entries that I read were entry 89 and entry 91. These entries were similar by are different at the same time. Entry 89 says how a boy went to Washington to see Richard Riley. He was the Secretary of Education. The reason the boy was there was because Ms. Gruwell made a trip to visit him so he could read the freedom writers book that the students created. The boy wasn’t so happy for Richard Riley to read his entry because he probably didn’t want anyone to know. The boy explained how his brother survived from a gunshot. The boy’s brother was driving on the freeway and a car full of Mexicans came behind next to him and shot him four times. The boy was doing the best as he can so that he can save his brother. He wasn’t so happy to see how his brother was looking. The boy thought his brother was going to die. Luckily he survived and was out of the hospital in a week. The boy is hero for saving his brother. That’s why he wanted Richard Riley to read his diary. Entry 91 talks about a daughter’s mother who is being beaten up by her mother’s boyfriend. He would be beat her up for not having money to buy drugs. Their house got evicted because the mother wasn’t able to pay the bills because her boyfriend was taking all the money for his drugs. The daughter wouldn’t do anything because she didn’t know how he would react to her. The daughter blames herself for her mother getting beaten up.
Similarities: These entries have some similarities. Even though they are not the same, they have to do with the person they love. They are situations in which it’s a risk for them to help out the person they love that will always be there for them. The lesson that I taught even though the people you love are in danger, you should always be there for them and help them in anything they need. Before you get a beautiful butterfly, it must be a caterpillar.

The two entries that I read were Diary 100 and Diary 101. They were similar but different in that Dairy 100 talks about how he or she had once had to leave the comforts of their homes and live in the streets were he or she had to sleep with frightening thoughts of terrible things happing to them while they would sleep under the stars as he or she would call it. In Diary 101 he or she was a star pupil until she or he had to start taking care of their younger siblings and to pay the rent of the housed they lived in. He or she was used as the good example of the class had straight A’s and B’s never missed a day of school. Always turned in school work on time and never gave up on anything.
The Similarities are that Diary 100 and Diary 101 were both getting thrown out of their homes with only a week to get all their belongings and move out. Both of them had nowhere to go and no money to find another place. They also were thinking of quitting school to work a full time job to pay for a place to call home. With the help of their beloved teacher Ms.Gruwell they both decided to stay in school and do their best.

Remember, guys and gals, you need to capitalize titles, especially the title of the book.

OK, love you! Nice work so far :o)

In this week’s pages of TFWD, I was torn to pick only two entries to write about due to the fact that they were all so touching. Entry number 89 and 90 cached my eye. It seemed to me like both writers saw the light, and couldn’t help but feel proud for what they have internally accomplished. In entry number 89 the writer talks about meeting The United States Secretary of Education, and noticing how different they really are, how they have different cultures and live different lives, yet the writer notice’s that they are there for the same reasons. To make a CHANGE. In entry number 9o the writer also see’s that something so simple like gathering together can make a big difference. How different people get together for the bigger picture and change lives. Both entries make me see that the world is filled with a lot of diversity which brings conflict and hurt, yet also with being different brings different views and opinions. What I come to see is that being informed and helping others is very important. Together like the entries say, we can make a difference and change the world.

In the book Freedom Writer Diary they’re two entries that are similar and different at the same time. Entry 97 and entry 98. Entry 97 is about a girl who lives with her mom and without a dad. Well the mom is tired of being a mom. It makes the girl feel that her mother doesn’t care about her. The mom spends most of her time doing drugs and drinking, so the girl has to take care of herself. She feels embarrassed that her mom doesn’t give her any curfews or rules to follow. So the girl gives herself curfews and rules. She began to feel lonely and depressed. She missed having a real mother. She wanted things to be how they were before HER and HER MOTHER.
In the entry 98, it’s about a girl who once had a family with a dad and a mom. In her family there was lots of love. One day the mom felt she needed more freedom, so she walked out on the family. So she stayed living with her dad. One day the dad ended up getting a girlfriend. She did not like the girlfriend, because she was still missing her real mom. On top of that, since he had a new girlfriend he did not pay any attention to her and the sisters. She and her sister moved to their aunt’s house. At first the aunt gave them lot of love and attention. Shortly after moving in, the aunt got a boyfriend who was in jail. The other niece and her friends started bringing drugs to the house. The sister and the girl figure out that family was planning on moving without them. The two sisters had to move again, her sister moved with the neighbor and the girl moved with her cousin.
The similarities are that at the beginning of the story, both homes were full with love. Then one morning both moms decided that they needed more freedom. The only difference was that one mom left the house while the other mom was in the house, but never acted like if she was there. Also both of the girls had to take care of themselves. Last they both only felt love and guidance in room 203.
What inspired me was that both girls took care of themselves and didn’t let the hard times bring them down. Also reading the two entries I learned that you could never give up and you should always keep trying because one day you will get the family you want like the one in room 203 and room 2219.

The two entries that i read were entry 63 and entry 64.These two entries were so different but similar at the same time.In entry 63 the girl talk about how her boyfriend is always beating her up.She always have to pretend that everything is fine in front of her mom. When she goes to her room all she can do is break down and crying after seeing all her marks.Sometimes her boyfriend apologizes for what hes doing, but is already late. All she wants is someone to show her that they care about her and show her some love. While the girl in entry 64 talk about how she can related to Celie from the book The Color Purple.Just like Celie when you look at her you see a loving girl but deep inside when you look in her hear all you can see is pain.Is not easy for her to see her alcoholic step beat her mom.Shes always trying to protect her mom but when hes drunk he doesn't care about anything. Both girls from entry 63 and 64 now know that the color purple is not just a color. And even though they look happy inside them theres a lot of pain, that they wish would just go away. This two entries were really sad,and touch my heart.

Diary 67 and Diary 68 have similarities and differences. 67 is how silence is not technically wrong but bad because it will get you nowhere in life. As for in Diary 68 being silent is the best thing for the writer because its their way of staying strong and not bringing back all the hurt and sadness, so writing will only make it worse. No matter what you are always good at something unless you think low of yourslef and think you cant do it when you really can. I mean thats just the way life works, you work hard and get paid for all your effort as for slacking and getting into trouble will get you either in jail or dead.

Diary Entries #97 and #98 can be compared and contrasted due to their similar situations. Both students feel as if the Freedom Writers have become their family, they understand each other, have actually had the time and patience to listen to each and everyone's story that has been told. The Freedom Writer's have been a huge support in both students lives and has help them overcome countless of fences and hurdles. In entry #97, the student does not acquire an house hold with rules and regulations, she/ he has had to grow up on their own, with no guidance to steer themselves on the correct path. The Freedom Writers to this student has filled a huge whole, with security. A group of people that care for him/her. In the diary entry #98 its a little different, because this adolescent continues to jump from household to household, she feels that there has been icons to fulfill the mother position but no one has ever succeeded as how Ms.Gruwell has. She has found a family in the Freedom Writers.

In Diary Entries 97 and 98 the students faced alike, yet different situations. In entry 97 the students are talking about how the freedom writers have become a better part of the writers, and how she or he is very happy that the Freedom writers are now part of his family, and that they all with Mrs.G have help every single one of them change into a better person. But they contrast because in entry 98 the girl didn’t have any rules. Her mom didn’t care about what she did. She didn’t have any boundaries. She basically raised herself, but when, Mrs.G came she taught her rules, and all of those good stuff and became kinds of like a mom to her.

The diary entries 100 and 101 are alike because they both are poor or are dealing with money issues. In diary 100 he/she is being evicted and they don't know where they're going to go. While in diary 101 he/ she isn't evicted yet but is behind on her/his payments. This freedom writer is left by alone only with their yonger siblings and all the over due payments, while his/her parents are out of town. But wht they both have in common is that they both want to give up and quit on everything but the inspiration of other people stop them from giving up because they realize that they are not on their own or that someone understands what they are going through.

In diary entry 100 and 101 they are talking about living issues in their house hold. They are both facing tough money problems and can’t offer to pay rent. In diary 100 she has already received an eviction letter that says she has one week to pack and leave immediately. In diary 101she is trying to earn money to pay the rent they owe the landlord keeps calling to see if they have the money to pay the rent. The writer in diary 100 is thinking about dropping out of high school and working a full time job to help her mother find a home. In diary 101 she is also thinking about dropping out but she realizes the best thing to do is to stay in high school and go to college to have a better future. In both entries the lesson learned is not to drop out of high school just to keep working hard that anything is possible in life. Education is the most important thing to have in life to succeed. Both of their parents have had a tough life and want their kids to have a better future and stay in school to succeed in life. Their inspiration is their parents because they see how hard it’s been for them without and education. Even though they want to give up sometimes Mrs.Gruwell also inspires them to be better and not quit so easily. She also gives them hope to go to college and have an education so they can break the history of their parents not finishing high school or going to college.

Two entries I read diary 67 and diary 68 these two entries have some in common and differences. Both talk about silence. Silence seems to be something that we don’t seem to pay much attention to because everywhere we go everyone’s talking and we tend to forget about people that are there but are quiet. In diary 67 the writer defends one of his or her mother’s quote “Silence will get nowhere in life”. She stated that many horrible events we could of stopped in life all happened because someone didn’t talk about it and let it happened. On the other hand in diary 68 the writer is against the fact that being silent is a bad thing but feels more comfortable being silent. To the writer of this entry is best for them not to say anything about things because it makes them feel worse if they stay silent and not talk about things for example their brothers death the writer says they can forget and won’t be so painful but just over analyzing it and writing it down and talking about just makes it worst.

The Freedom Writers Diary

The two entries that I read were 100 and 101 these two entries were similar but at the same time the two entries are very different because in entry 100 he is being evicted from his home while in diary entry 101 he’s not being evicted but he might because he is behind with the rent payments. The two entries are also similar because they both talk about their money problems none of them have money to pay the rent and they soon will have to life their homes. They are both also thinking about quitting school,to get a job so they can help.

The two entries that I choose for this assignment are Diary 68 and Diary 69. They are both very similar and diffrent at the same time. First of all Diary 68 is talking about wanting to forget about his/her brothers tragic death, and saying that writing about it is not going to make it better. Diary 69 is talking about the same thing, not wanting to write about certain things in his/her life because it brings to much pain, and all they want to do is forget about it. Both of thier entries end with "Writing about it will only make it worse". The only diffrence between the two Diarys is that in 68 he/she wants to forget his/her brothers death, but in 69 it talks about not wanting to be reminded where they came from because it is so horrible. In the end they just want to move on, and have a better life.

The two entries that interested me the most were Diaries 97 and 98. They are both similar in the way that they both considered the freedom writers as their families. Both entrees went through rough times with their families, had no one else to go to besides the freedom writers. In Diary 97, the child had a mother but felt as like he/she did not. The mother was careless for the child, and let him/she do whatever it wanted. The child did not want that though, the child wanted a mother who cared, a mother who gave curfew. He/she felt unloved and unwanted. In Diary 98, the child had a great loving family until their mother walked out on them. All that was left was he/she’s sisters and father. The father then remarried and the daughters felt neglected. Then, they went to love with an aunt who felt close to, little did they know, she ended up leaving them too. The two sisters ended up splitting up, one living with the neighbor, and the other living with a cousin. Both hoping for no more disasters to happen. Both entrees hoped the freedom writer’s family wouldn’t get split up. They both agreed on that’s they only they have close to each other. They considered one another family and they did not want to go through loosing each other, if their class got split up.

The two entries’ that really caught my eye was Diary 68 and Diary 69. They seemed to evoke all kinds of feelings since I have a brother as well and it just made me think about him and how dreadful it would be if anything ever those happened to him. This young boy talks about how he lost his brother and how life has been treating him, after the tragic death. He also, discusses how his pain that is sinking down deep in his heart and the only thing he wants to do is break free. Not only that but he feels that sometimes he believe that by writing his brother his not going to return so it’s worthless. In entry 69, he/she believes that by him writing about his past it will just inflict even more pain instead of releasing it. Both of this entry have one thing in common, and that is something tragic that has hurt them and they believe that by them writing on a journal will not fix anything but on the contrary it will inflict more pain.

SINCE WE HAD TO CHOOSE TWO ENTRIES FROM THE FREEDOM WRITERS DIARY , AND REFLECT ON I DECIDED TO CHOOSE ENTRY NUMBERS 89 AND 97. ENTRY 89 EXPLAINS HOW ONE BOY VISITS THE UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF EDUCATION. THIS ONE STUDENT DIDN'T WANT HIS DIARY READ BECAUSE IT EXPLAINS HOW HIS DAILY LIFE IS- GUNSHOTS, DRIVE BYES AND DRUGS. ENTRY 97 WAS ABOUT A GIRL WHO IN A WAY WANTED RULES TO FOLLOW SO SHE IMPLIED THEM ON HERSELF. THIS ONE GIRL FEELS SAD THAT HER MOTHER HAS CHANGED SO MUCH :)

LOVE YOU ♥♥♥♥♥

The two diary that were similar yet different in ways were entries 63 & 64. To start off with, diary entries 63 and 64 are similar because in diary 63 the young girl is explaining just started reading the book "The Color Purple" & how the main character Celie reminded her about her abusive relationship with her boyfriend that had changed her life. The boyfriend constantly kept hitting her & the girl would not do anything about it. All she did was pretend it never happened & lock herself up in the room & cry about all the bruises he had left her in addition that she hides it from her mom. This can be related to diary entry 64 because in entry 64 because even though the girl writing was not abused, reading The Color Purple made her think back to when her mom would get beaten up by her stepdad. The stepdad would get drunk, and he goes "all out" as it says in the book: "He doesn't care about anything and tries to destroy anything that gets in the way." Diary entries 63 & 64 are similar however they are different. For example, entry 63 the girl that is writing is the one that has been verbally abused as in diary entry 64 the young girl's mother was the one being beaten up. These entries really got to me because not only can the girls relate to the book but they can relate to other people that have gone through that as well.

In this weeks reading I think that Entry 103 and 104 were similar. First off they are both similar because in both the girls don’t know what they want to be when they grow up and they choose something that they can be and not what they want to be. For instance, Mrs. Gruwell tells one girl “You could do anything, go anywhere, and be anyone.” This motivates them both. Also they after both choose something and get support from their fellow peers “The Freedom Writers“ and they get motivated.

Diary 86 on page 170-172 really touched me because although my sister isn’t exactly my twin, spiritually she’s more than that to me. The same way that it made the author realize how much they loved their twin, it made me think how much I love mine. In addition, this particular diary talks about how “kids these days have the chance to dream about what they want to be and want to change”. Which brings me to Diary 95 on pages 185-187. It’s funny how the author of diary 86 is realizing how we actually have the chance to make a change, and diary 95 describes the reckless things teenage boys have the guts to do. Not to mention, how the things that call for attention are the negative ones, instead of the positive ones. These diaries compare because one is talking about the amount of power we teenagers have to make a change, but still not all decide to make positive changes and most importantly that the good ones aren’t the ones that get credit most of the time.

TWFD Pages 192-220.

Diary 99 and 100 in pages 195-108 are both similar because the narrators want to attend college but have no fund. In contrast, the author of diary 99 has high expectations of entering a college after hearing Ms.Cheryls' anecdote, which was to ignore all but her main goal: to go to college. On the oter hand, the writer of diary 100 is doubtful of being present at a college because she nor her family live under a roof but beneath the stars and are dependent on support.

SaraiR3 said...

In Diary 110 and 112 both narrators are emotionally affected by their fathers. In diary 110 the author is wounded profoundly because he describes his father as a drug addict, abuser, and coward because he assumes he left his mom and him leaving all those unwanted years to spend time with his family. Diary 112's the opposite. The storyteller is extremely glad to have a father through christmas and whenever he can.. even if the dad experiences seizures, has alzeimers', and difficulty talking. To the authors' eyes , the father is still there regardless of his condition to cherish his family.
